Cadaver tomb

Cadaver tomb
Modern term for a tomb which bears on top a sculpture of a decaying corpse. They are one of the blacker elements of the late medieval imagination, the kind of memento mori which was also represented in the more familiar *Dance of Death. Such tombs carried epitaphs; one such began: 'For like as I am, right shall ye all be'.
